Development of EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) environmental certifications of educational services: Unimore starring

The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia pursues the principle of Sustainable Development and Sustainability in all its multiple aspects and is committed to the promotion and implementation of actions aimed at Sustainability within the University and the promotion and enhancement of external initiatives. The promotion and implementation of practices that aim to contribute to the achievement of the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is part of the 2020-2025 strategic plan, and Unimore has committed to monitoring and quantifying the environmental impact within it. The LCA Working Group (research), which develops the LCA – Life Cycle Assessment methodology, of the Department of Sciences and Methods for Engineering, developed for the first time the PCR (Product Category Rule), i.e. the rules and guidelines that must be followed to obtain the EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) of any educational service. In particular, PCRs were developed for the CPC (Central Product Classification) codes provided by the United Nations Statistics Division and related to Education services and First stage tertiary education services. There are numerous criteria for environmental assessment, covering lecturers, the tools needed for learning, the students benefiting from the services, the administrative staff, and the location where the service is provided, the energy needed to light, heat and cool the rooms and all that is used and consumed, as well as travel to and from the university were also taken into account.
