Unimore inaugurates DIEF's new green area: a project for sustainability and biodiversity
On the afternoon of 22 October 2024, the inauguration took place of the new green area of the Enzo Ferrari Department of Engineering of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, located in the courtyard of the Modena Technopole, in Via Pietro Vivarelli.
The initiative was realised thanks to the support of the Fondazione di Modena, within the framework of the Bando Verde Comune 2023 (Municipal Green Grant 2023), intended for the redevelopment of public green areas and the creation of open spaces, accessible and usable by the community, to be made into places of social and cultural aggregation. This intervention fits into the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda, with particular reference to the theme of Sustainable Cities.
The design of the area favoured the use of plant species typical of the Mediterranean area, in order to enhance the aspect of biodiversity in a context of environmental sustainability. A central element of the park is the Meteorological Station, part of the network of the Geophysical Observatory of Modena, which for years has been collecting valuable data for the study of the local climate.
The ceremony, introduced by Grazia Ghermandi, Unimore Delegate for Sustainability, was attended by the Magnifico Rettore of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Carlo Adolfo Porro, and Matteo Tiezzi, President of the Fondazione di Modena. Also present were Massimo Borghi, Director of the Enzo Ferrari Department of Engineering, and Stefano Savoia, Head of Unimore's Technical, Building, Facility Management and Sustainability Department, as well as Gianmarco Fabiano, a representative of the students who, within Unimore's Academic Bodies, have promoted this project.
After the institutional greetings, there was a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a guided tour of the green area, during which the main elements of the project, such as the plant species and the Weather Station, were explained.
Today we are inaugurating a green area that is a concrete expression of our University's commitment to sustainability and the care of the spaces dedicated to our community, emphasises Unimore's Rector, Prof. Carlo Adolfo Porro. Thanks to the collaboration with the Fondazione di Modena, we have created a place that promotes biodiversity and offers a quality environment for those who study and work here. The Meteorological Station in the park continues to collect valuable data for climate research, an increasingly topical issue. This space, far from being a mere garden, is a resource for the entire city and for those who participate in academic life on a daily basis. The University will continue to pursue projects that enhance the area and improve the quality of life for all.
The Bando Verde Comune was created to give life to environmental and socio-cultural regeneration experiences such as this one, commented Matteo Tiezzi, President of the Fondazione di Modena, a tangible symbol of the increasingly close link between university, community and territory. There is an increasing need for green spaces, for good spaces, the result of projects that are able to involve. Spaces for dialogue and proximity between people, but also places where responsibility can become shared action. Reality tells us that sustainability is not only about preserving nature, but also about understanding the interconnections between all aspects of life. Sometimes small actions, small projects to be born together are enough to remind us of this.
