Second win of the season for Unimore's MORE Modena Racing team at the Bugatti Rimac Test Track in Croatia

After the recent victory in the Formula Student Austria, the MORE Modena Racing team of Unimore did the encore, reaching the top of the podium also in the competition held from 20 to 25 August on the Bugatti Rimac Test Track in Velika Gorica, Croatia.

The MORE Modena Racing team took part in the race with the prototype developed for this season: a hybrid car equipped at the rear with a combustion engine powered by biofuel (E85) and at the front with two electric motors mounted directly inside the wheel unit, giving the car a total power output of more than 100hp with a mass of around 210kg and guaranteeing 0-100km/h acceleration of 2.8 seconds.

A total of eight tests took place during the competition days: three static tests in which students were called upon to defend their project to panels of expert judges in the fields of engineering design (Engineering Design test) cost management and production (Cost and Manufacturing test) and economics and marketing (Business Presentation test), and five dynamic tests measuring the car's performance on acceleration (Acceleration test), car dynamics (Skidpad test), lap time (Autocross test), total race time over 22 km (Endurance test) and fuel consumption and efficiency (Efficiency test).

For the first time, the Team of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia managed to get on the podium of all eight tests, thus winning the final victory of the event, the second consecutive one after the recent success in July at the RedBull Ring in Austria.

‘Another victory,’ comments the Director of the “Enzo Ferrari” Department of Engineering, Prof. Massimo Borghi, ’is a clear measure of the quality and merit of our students and lecturers, who always carry out this challenging project with great commitment and passion. As Director of the Department, I can also confirm that it is a great honour for me to welcome the main activities of the teams, which I would like to remind you include more than 200 students also from other Departments of our University, such as the Department of Science and Engineering Methods, the Department of Economics ‘Enzo Biagi’, the Department of Physics, Informatics and Mathematics, the Department of Communication and Economics of Reggio Emilia and the Department of Life Sciences’.

The comments of the project's Faculty Advisors, Prof. Matteo Giacopini, Prof. Valerio Mangeruga, Prof. Enrico Mattarelli and Prof. Davide Barater are in agreement: ‘An incredible result that repays not only the last few months of hard work that have enabled us to realise this season's prototype, but above all the years we have invested in creating a solid and well-organised project, of which these results are the confirmation. The members of this year's team have been fantastic in realising the potential at their disposal and a huge credit and a huge gratitude for these victories is due to them’.

Enthusiastic Team Leader and Team Technical Director, students Beatrice Terz o and Lorenzo Marrone: ‘We would like to thank all the guys in the team, and especially those who came to the race, who made it possible to achieve this fantastic result, which confirms the hard work that has been done this year . It was a pleasure and above all an honour to be able to see with our own eyes the growth of the team day after day. The first great satisfaction was certainly to obtain a podium place for each of the race tests and, in particular, for the static tests in which we are usually weaker, confirming a clear growth of the team.  In addition, it was extremely gratifying to receive many compliments from the competition judges, who are all experienced engineers from major companies. Being able to compare ourselves with them on the same level, exchanging different ideas and points of view, is very inspiring and rewarding.’

Team More Modena Racing has achieved another victory that fills us with pride,’ continues the Director General of the University, Engineer Luca Chiantore. ’Formula Student is an international competition of great importance, an opportunity for universities from different countries to compare notes, for technical growth and a unique team-building experience.  I would like to congratulate the entire team on the competence and quality of their work, their commitment and the brilliant results they achieved.”

The Foundation congratulates the entire team of students and lecturers,’ continues Prof. Veleria Marigo, the University's representative on the Modena Foundation Board of Directors, ’for the second exciting result of the season, which confirms the passion and commitment to this project. Formula Student allows students to engage in projects that converge academic knowledge, technological innovation and personal growth, with implications that extend far beyond the confines of the university. In our area, this initiative stimulates development and innovation that is reaching hundreds and hundreds of girls and boys over the years, and seals the collaboration between the university and the world of industry.’

Formula Student Alpe Adria is part of the international educational project Formula Student, the most well-established educational engineering competition in Europe, which aims to train students, develop new technologies, expand the STEM area and networking. The FS Alpe Adria is an official (as of 2022) and unique competition in the region.

The next competition, involving both the MoRe Modena Racing Hybrid team and the MoRe Modena Racing Driverless team, will be held from 3 to 8 September at the Varano de Melegari Circuit (Parma).
