Formula Student: More Modena Racing Team triumphs in Austria at the RedBull Ring

The Formula Student Austria races, held from 22 to 25 July at the RedBull Ring in Zeltweg, were dominated by the More Modena Racing team from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.  It is the first time an Italian team has succeeded in this feat.

Supported also by the Modena Foundation, the More Modena Racing team from Unimore drove a highly innovative vehicle on the circuit: a hybrid car equipped at the rear with a combustion engine powered by biofuel (E85) and at the front with two electric motors mounted directly inside the wheel unit. In spite of the competition's stringent technical checks, the single-seater brilliantly passed the inspection tests, thanks to the ingenuity and technical skills of the students, and was then presented on the track to take part in the several tests planned.

On the circuit, the biofuel hybrid car dominated the competition, winning four of the five dynamic tests (victory in Acceleration, Autocross, Endurance, Efficiency and second place in Skidpad) while also achieving excellent results in the static tests. Among the various prizes won by the team, it is worth highlighting the victory in the Efficiency test, which measures the amount of CO2 equivalent emitted by the vehicles during the competition, thanks to the brilliant integration of the use of biofuels and hybrid architecture in the prototype development process.

The sum of the scores then established the overall victory of the More Modena Racing team in the event, repeating last year's success at the Silverstone circuit, leading to a result never before achieved by any other Italian university in the history of the competition.

‘This victory is a huge credit to our students, who with their commitment, creativity and innovative spirit have shown that they can compete and win on an international scale,' commented the Director of the “Enzo Ferrari” Department of Engineering, Prof. Massimo Borghi . ’It is a success for the University and for the city of Modena. A success that demonstrates how investment in quality training and research always pays off. As Director of the Department, it is a great honour for me to be able to host the main activities of the teams, which I would like to remind you include more than 200 students also from other Departments of our University, such as the Department of Engineering Sciences and Methods, the ‘Enzo Biagi’ Department of Economics, the Department of Physics, Informatics and Mathematics, the Department of Communication and Economics of Reggio Emilia and the Department of Life Sciences'.

The comments of the project's Faculty Advisors, Professors Matteo Giacopini, Valerio Mangeruga, Enrico Mattarelli and Davide Barater are unanimous: ‘It is an achievement that repays the students for the enormous commitment they have put into the project over the past year. It was wonderful to see them explode with joy once they crossed the finish line. This success demonstrates how passion, dedication and, above all, collaboration between team members can lead to extraordinary results like this’.

We couldn't imagine a better way to start the season. Only a week ago we were overjoyed with the presentation of the car and it already felt like we had achieved something incredible. It has been an intense period, consisting of endless nights in the workshop to finish the car and in the office to complete the development of the components and the preparation of the necessary documents for the competition. Our greatest gratification was to share this great result with all the team members who have been a second family to us for several months now. This is worth more than an overall first place in the competition and it fills us with pride to have written another piece of history in our University's Formula Student journey,’ added Team Leader and Team Technical Director, students Beatrice Terzi and Lorenzo Marrone.

‘Team More Modena Racing confirms its excellence,’ explained the Director General of the University, Eng. Luca Chiantore, ’and achieves an extremely valuable result. Formula Student is an increasingly popular and complex international competition, an opportunity for comparison between universities of different nations, technical growth and a unique team-building experience. The competence and commitment of our students and professors, the high level of Unimore's teaching and research are the basis of the result obtained. I congratulate the entire team, a source of pride for the University'.

‘The Foundation congratulates the entire team of students and professors,’ said Prof. Valeria Marigo, Unimore representative on the Modena Foundation Board of Directors, ‘for the exciting result that seals the passion and commitment in this project. Experiences such as these represent an ideal microcosm where academic knowledge, technological innovation and personal growth converge, with implications that extend far beyond the confines of the university. For our community, this initiative is a powerful catalyst for development and innovation that is reaching hundreds and hundreds of girls and boys over the years, and above all a connective tissue between the university and the territory, between academic knowledge and the industrial world.’

‘MUNER supports the Unimore team, as well as the teams of the other regional universities, with great conviction, aware of the extraordinary educational value of the initiative for the girls and boys involved, regardless of the outcome of the races,’ concluded Francesco Leali, Managing Director of MUNER - Motorvehicle University of Emilia-Romagna, with satisfaction. ‘However, those who live in the Motor Valley can only compete with the ambition of victory: they owe it to the history of this territory, to the skills and value of its protagonists. We share the team's pride and joy for the goal they have achieved, and we wish them every encouragement as they continue their journey both as people capable of sharing passion and commitment, and as professionals always oriented towards knowledge, innovation and excellence'.

Formula Student, now in its 26th year, is the most established educational engineering competition in Europe. Backed by leading industry figures and renowned engineers, the competition aims to develop enterprising and innovative young engineers, encouraging more young people to pursue careers in engineering. Each year, more than one hundred university teams from all over the world participate.

Participation in Formula Student is an important opportunity granted to students as part of their studies and is seen by the motorsport industry as an added value that greatly facilitates their transition from university to the world of work.
