Prof. Luca Rigamonti member of the accompanying delegation of the Italian team at the International Chemistry Olympiad

Prof. Luca Rigamonti, lecturer in the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences at Unimore, has been selected as a member of the supporting delegation of the Italian Olympic Team for participation in the 56th edition of the International Chemistry Olympiad, to be held in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), from 21 to 30 July.

The members of the accompanying delegation are professionals involved in the preparation and selection of the national team. During the 10 days of the Olympiad, the tasks of the delegation are numerous: it participates in the collegial discussion of the theoretical problems and the practical test with all the other delegations from around the world in order to ensure the correctness of the texts and usability before the tests take place; it translates the test texts into its own language to facilitate the students‘ performance; it corrects and translates the students’ answers into English so that the scientific committee of the Olympiad can also correct the test; it discusses the corrections collegially to arrive at the final score.

The International Chemistry Olympiad is an annual competition for the most talented secondary school chemistry students from many countries around the world. Each nation sends a team of up to four students who are tested on their knowledge and skills in chemistry in a practical laboratory exam and a theoretical exam..

‘I am very proud that the Italian Chemical Society has accepted my candidature to be part of the Italian delegation that will accompany to the next International Chemistry Olympiad IChO 2024 our secondary school students who have excelled in the Chemistry Games at the national level and thus formed the Italian team. I will carry out the task assigned to me with the utmost commitment, so that our students can excel in the spirit of beauty and power that distinguishes the discipline of chemistry,' comments Prof. Rigamonti .

The Italian team was selected thanks to the Chemistry Games, organised by the ICS on behalf of the Directorate-General for School Regulations, Evaluation and Internationalisation of the National Education System of the Ministry of Education and Merit - MIM. Established in 1984, the Chemistry Games and Chemistry Olympiad are among the initiatives for the enhancement of excellence for upper secondary school students.
