Unimore and harnessing the full potential of Sport

Unimore has long regarded sport as a fundamental support for growth, a tool for improving well-being and encouraging healthy lifestyles. The World Health Organisation (WHO) in its plan ‘Physical activity for health’ 2018-2030 identifies physical activity as a direct contribution to SDG3 (Good health and Well-being) and academic institutions have a strategic role. Fostering relationships, enhancing teamwork, increasing the sense of belonging, consolidating self-esteem and determination, educating to sacrifice and the ethics of doing and doing well, are among the values of sport that Unimore recognises and considers fundamental in the university sphere, together with other universities affiliated to the Unisport Italia network, set up in 2018 to create a systematic coordination between Italian universities aimed at developing between Academy and Sport. This relationship is crucial considering the international environment in which universities operate: sport plays a decisive role in qualifying the standards of universities, both in terms of the educational and dual-career offer for students and in terms of the well-being offered to the academic community. Unimore Sport Excellence is the Unimore’s dual-career project that attracts more and more students every year (73 admitted in the 2022-23 academic year). The number of scholarships financed by private individuals and companies for sporting and academic merits increased from 2 to 7, showing how the dual career project is also appreciated by the outside world. This year, Unimore’s teaching offer has been enriched by the new master’s degree programme ‘Health and Sport’, in collaboration with the University of Verona, and the first edition of the Vocational (first-level) master programme in Sport System Management, in collaboration with the University of San Marino. Unimore was elected as the representative of all the universities of Emilia-Romagna in the Region’s Sports Conference.
