Efthimios Karymbalis, Visiting Professor at the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences

The intensity and severity of the negative impacts of climate change are on the rise, and heavily affect our society. Climate change poses a threat not only to assets, livelihoods and ecosystems, but also to our ability to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which have been established within the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development aiming at the implementation of a new strategy over the next 15 years.

Within this framework, a PhD course is offered at the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences by Professor Efthimios Karymbalis, coastal and fluvial geomorphologist of the Harokopio University of Athens, who is currently Visiting Professor at Unimore.

The seminars will focus on climate change related hazards, focusing on coastal and fluvial floods, and their increasingly severe and intense negative impacts. They will provide an overview of methods for assessing climate change induced flood hazards and risks and their potential consequences, taking into account both the processes and consequences of expected hazardous events.

Efthimios Karymbalis is Full Professor of at the Department of Geography of the Harokopio University of Athens (Greece).

Efthimios Karymbalis’ research activities and publications focus on coastal and fluvial geomorphology, climate change-induced hazards and their consequences with special focus on flash floods and long-term sea-level rise, geomorphological mapping, paleogeography and Quaternary geology. He serves as the Deputy Head of the Department of Geography of the Harokopio University of Athens and previously held the position of Director of the Postgraduate Program in “Applied Geography and Spatial Planning” of the same University. He served as President of the Hellenic Committee for Geomorphology and Environment of the Geological Society of Greece for four years and currently holds the position of Secretary General for the Committee. Since 2022 he is the Training Officer of the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG).

Professor Karymbalis has a long-standing collaboration with the Geomorphology team of Unimore which was recently enhanced in the frame of a ‘Collaborative Agreement for Culture and Science & Technology’ signed by the Rectors of Harokopio University and Unimore (Scientific responsible at Unimore: Prof. Mauro Soldati).
